Our Programs - MBIZ Development Foundation

Conservation

MDF recognizes Kisoro District as a biodiversity hotspot, home to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, volcanic highlands, and fragile ecosystems that sustain both wildlife and communities. Our conservation programs are designed to protect these unique resources while scaling solutions across Uganda.

In Kisoro:
  • Wildlife habitat protection around gorilla ranges and forest corridors
  • Soil erosion prevention on steep slopes of the Virunga ranges through terracing and agroforestry
  • Community-led reforestation with bamboo and indigenous tree nurseries
  • Cultural conservation by integrating traditional practices with sustainable natural resource use
  • Tourism promotion that benefits local households through eco-tourism and cultural tourism initiatives
  • Water body protection targeting Lake Mutanda and other local wetlands to reduce silting and pollution
  • Waste management innovations in Kisoro town to address plastic disposal and sanitation challenges
Across Uganda:
  • Scaling soil fertility technologies for smallholder farmers
  • Supporting district-level climate change adaptation strategies
  • Promoting national awareness campaigns on sustainable tourism and conservation

Protecting Biodiversity, Sustaining Communities

Human Rights

MDF places human dignity at the center of development. Kisoro, with its border communities and diverse cultures, faces unique challenges in access to services, gender equity, and protection of vulnerable groups. Our programs strengthen rights locally and nationally.

In Kisoro:
  • Right to education and health: Mobilizing caretakers during immunization drives and promoting safe motherhood initiatives
  • Women's rights: Advocacy for land ownership and asset disposal rights for women and girls
  • Protection from violence: Community sensitization against gender-based violence and child abuse
  • Safe workplaces and recreation: Promoting occupational safety in local markets and tourism sites
  • Healthy lifestyles: Campaigns on smoking cessation, reduced alcohol intake, nutrition, and physical activity
  • Disaster preparedness: Training communities near volcanic slopes and flood-prone areas in prevention and relief access
Across Uganda:
  • National advocacy for inclusive policies on education, health, and governance
  • Partnerships with civil society to advance rights to food security, housing, and safe environments
  • Strengthening women's participation in leadership and decision-making

Dignity, Equality, Justice

We champion the rights of women, girls, and vulnerable groups through advocacy, legal aid, economic empowerment, and community mobilization for lasting change.
